Not getting any sound in VMware can be a nuisance to troubleshoot because it can stem from either yours or the remote system\u2019s settings. The good news is that most attempts on how to fix malfunctioning microphone in VMWare will usually deal with both problems or completely reset it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fix 1: How to Fix Malfunctioning Microphone in VMware Settings<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

VMware Workstation allows you to manually connect audio input devices to the virtual machine. If the microphone is not enabled in the virtual machine settings, it will not work inside the guest operating system regardless of whether the device is connected to your host system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 1.<\/strong> Go to VMWare Workstation and power off the virtual machine you\u2019re troubleshooting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 2.<\/strong> Select the virtual machine and click on \u201cEdit virtual machine settings\u201d from the context menu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fix 4: Enable Microphone Permissions in Privacy Settings<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Modern operating systems including Windows 11 might block microphone access by default as a security and privacy measure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 1.<\/strong> Inside the guest operating system, go to Settings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 2.<\/strong> Navigate to the \u201cPrivacy\u201d or \u201cPrivacy & security\u201d section, depending on your Windows version.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 3.<\/strong> Scroll down and select \u201cMicrophone\u201d from the list of available permissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 4.<\/strong> You should see a toggle switch at the top labeled \u201cMicrophone access for this device.\u201d Ensure this toggle is set to \u201cOn.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 5.<\/strong> Below the main toggle, you will see a list of individual applications. Locate the specific application you are trying to use (such as Zoom, Teams, or a recording application) and ensure its toggle is also turned \u201cOn.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 6.<\/strong> If the application is not listed, scroll down and click \u201cAdd an app\u201d or \u201cAllow apps to access your microphone\u201d to add it manually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 7. <\/strong>Close the Settings window and test your microphone with the application to verify access has been properly granted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fix 5: Restart Audio Services in the Virtual Machine<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Audio services inside the virtual machine can fail to start correctly or become unresponsive, preventing the microphone from functioning. You may need to restart them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 1.<\/strong> Inside the guest operating system, press \u201cWin + R\u201d to open the Run dialog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 2.<\/strong> Enter \u201cservices.msc\u201d into the text field to open the Services management console.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 3.<\/strong> In the Services window, locate \u201cWindows Audio\u201d in the list of services. This is the primary service that handles audio functionality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 4.<\/strong> Right-click on \u201cWindows Audio\u201d and select \u201cRestart\u201d from the context menu. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
