You open Chrome settings to clear cookies on exit, go to the page where the toggle used to be, and it\u2019s not there. It looks like a bug or a broken profile, but it\u2019s neither. Google often renames settings and moves them to a different page, and this has happened to the history and cookies options. Apart from this, there are a few situations where the option for Chrome clear cookies is missing because it is blocked, which needs to be rechecked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why the Clear Cookies Option Seems Missing in Chrome<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Google now groups cookie and other site-data behavior under a setting called \u201cOn-device site data.\u201d The old \u201cClear cookies and site data when you close all windows\u201d checkbox is now one of three choices under a \u201cDefault behavior\u201d heading on a completely different settings page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you can see the setting but it is greyed out, that can be a problem. A greyed-out control means a policy is managing it, usually from a work or school profile, or from a leftover entry in Group Policy or the registry on a personal PC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fix 1 \u2013 Use the On-Device Site Data Setting<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This is the current location of the clear-on-exit option and where most people should start.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 1.<\/strong> Open Chrome, click the three-dot menu, and select \u201cSettings.\u201d You can also paste \u201cchrome:\/\/settings\/content\/siteData\u201d into the address bar to jump straight there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 2.<\/strong> If you prefer the menus, go to \u201cPrivacy and security\u201d > \u201cSite settings\u201d > \u201cAdditional content settings\u201d > \u201cOn-device site data.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 3.<\/strong> Under \u201cDefault behavior,\u201d select \u201cDelete data sites have saved to your device when you close all windows.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The third option, \u201cDon\u2019t allow sites to save data on your device,\u201d blocks storage completely and breaks a lot of websites, so stick with the middle one unless you know you want that. If there are sites you would rather stay signed in to, add them under \u201cCustomized behaviors.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fix 2 \u2013 Clear Cookies Manually<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you only want a clean slate right now, you do not need the automatic setting at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 1.<\/strong> Press \u201cCtrl + Shift + Delete\u201d (Cmd + Shift + Delete on Mac).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 2.<\/strong> Choose a time range, check \u201cCookies and other site data,\u201d and click the Delete button.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For a single website, you can use the address \u201cchrome:\/\/settings\/content\/all\u201d and search for the domain, then click the bin icon next to it. Be aware that this clears the entire storage scope for that site, including cached data and local storage, not just its cookies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fix 3 \u2013 Check Whether Chrome Is Being Managed<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A policy set by an employer, or one left behind by software you installed years ago, can hide or lock cookie settings. If this is the case, try the following if Chrome \u201cClear cookies\u201d not working.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 1.<\/strong> Type \u201cchrome:\/\/policy\u201d in the address bar and press \u201cEnter.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 2.<\/strong> Look through the list for cookie-related entries such as \u201cClearBrowsingDataOnExitList.\u201d If your browser belongs to a work or school account, this is where it will show up, and only an administrator can change it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 3.<\/strong> On a personal PC, open the Local Group Policy Editor and go to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Google Chrome. Double-click \u201cClear Browsing Data on Exit,\u201d set it to \u201cNot Configured,\u201d and click \u201cOK.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 4.<\/strong> If the policy was set through the registry instead, open Registry Editor, go to \u201cHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Policies\\Google\\Chrome,\u201d and delete the ClearBrowsingDataOnExitList entry. Restart the PC afterward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fix 4 \u2013 Make Sure Chrome Has Actually Closed<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Plenty of people set the option correctly and then find that their site data is still present the next morning. The setting applies when all Chrome windows are closed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 1.<\/strong> Close all Chrome windows, then open Task Manager and look for any remaining \u201cchrome.exe\u201d processes under the Details tab.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 2.<\/strong> End any that are still running, then reopen Chrome and check whether you have been signed out of the sites you visited.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t
