Of all partitions that might exist on your PC, none is more vital to its operation than the Extensible Firmware Interface, or EFI. It stores the essential files your machine needs to start, and if it\u2019s faulty, you\u2019re stuck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not to worry; in this article, we\u2019re going to show you how to fix EFI partition step-by-step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Is the EFI?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Before we get started, you might be wondering what the EFI is and why you never really see it mentioned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The EFI System Partition (ESP) is a dedicated partition on your drive that contains the UEFI boot files your machine needs to start the Windows operating system. It\u2019s formatted with FAT32 and can be identified using DiskPart in Command Prompt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019re having difficulty starting Windows, your EFI System Partition or its boot files might be corrupted or not working correctly. Our guide will show you how to rebuild EFI partition step by step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Enter Recovery Mode<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s start by entering the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE). If Windows is still accessible, hold down the \u201cShift\u201d key while selecting \u201cRestart.\u201d If Windows won\u2019t start, your system may automatically enter WinRE after repeated startup failures. You can also use Windows installation or recovery software to access the recovery tools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once in Recovery Mode, follow these steps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 1.<\/strong> Click \u201cAdvanced options.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 2.<\/strong> In the next menu, choose \u201cCommand Prompt.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Identify Your Drive<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The EFI System Partition (ESP) is usually a small FAT32 partition, often around 100\u2013500 MB in size, and DiskPart normally identifies it as \u201cSystem.\u201d To find it, follow these steps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 1.<\/strong> In \u201cCommand Prompt,\u201d type \u201cbcdedit\u201d and press \u201cEnter.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 2.<\/strong> In the Windows Boot Loader section, look for the \u201cosdevice\u201d entry. This tells you the drive letter assigned to the Windows partition in the Recovery Environment. Make a note of it, as it may not be \u201cC.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 3.<\/strong> Type \u201cdiskpart\u201d and press \u201cEnter\u201d to start the DiskPart utility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 6.<\/strong> Make a note of the volume number of the EFI System Partition. Then type \u201cselect volume 5,\u201d replacing 5 with the correct volume number, and press \u201cEnter.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 7.<\/strong> Type \u201cassign letter=Z\u201d and press \u201cEnter.\u201d This temporarily assigns the EFI System Partition the drive letter Z: so that you can work with it from Command Prompt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 8.<\/strong> Type \u201cexit\u201d and press \u201cEnter\u201d to leave DiskPart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Formatting the Partition<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

If your EFI System Partition has been corrupted or is listed as \u201cRAW\u201d rather than \u201cFAT32,\u201d you may need to reformat the partition before rebuilding the boot files:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 1.<\/strong> Type \u201cformat Z: \/FS:FAT32 \/Q\u201d and hit \u201cEnter.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 2.<\/strong> Hit \u201cY\u201d to begin the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 3.<\/strong> When prompted for a new name, enter \u201cEFI\u201d and hit \u201cEnter.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rebuild the Boot Files<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

If the boot files have been corrupted, you\u2019ll need to rebuild the BCD and boot files on the EFI System Partition using the Windows directory (your main OS disk). Here\u2019s what to do:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 1.<\/strong> In Command Prompt, type \u201cbcdboot C:\\Windows \/s Z: \/f UEFI,\u201d where the two capital letters are your main OS drive and your EFI partition. Hit \u201cEnter\u201d to begin the rebuild. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

With all this done, your EFI partition should be rebuilt, reformatted, and ready to go.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t
