Not to worry. In this article, we\u2019ll be explaining why and also show you how to work around the error.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-what-causes-this-error\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Causes This Error?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let\u2019s start with why you cannot shrink a volume beyond a point. It\u2019s often down to unmovable system files. If you\u2019re shrinking the volume your OS is installed on, for example, you\u2019ll likely run into this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">System files like these are important to the running of your machine. When you shrink a volume, Windows attempts to move files toward the beginning of the volume to create free space at the end, except for files designated as unmovable. The biggest offenders are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Hiberfil.sys<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pagefile.sys<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Shadow copy storage (VSS)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>File system and storage-driver metadata<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The best way to resolve this is to disable, delete, and try again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-fix-cannot-shrink-a-volume-beyond-the-point-with-these-troubleshooters\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fix \u201cCannot Shrink a Volume Beyond the Point\u201d With These Troubleshooters<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let\u2019s get into fixing this error. We\u2019ve got some solutions lined up below:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-defragment-your-disk\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Defragment Your Disk<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps the least intrusive place to start is by optimizing your drive, which can consolidate fragmented files and make more free space available toward the end of the volume. Here\u2019s what to do:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Step 1.<\/strong> Type \u201cdefrag\u201d or \u201cdefragment\u201d into the search bar and wait for the \u201cDefragment and Optimize Drives\u201d system to pop up. Click it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Step 2.<\/strong> A window will open showing the available drives. After disabling each, try shrinking your volume, only progressing to the next if unsuccessful. If it works, don\u2019t forget to reactivate them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For \u201cHibernate,\u201d you can use Command Prompt:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Step 1.<\/strong> Open the Run dialog (Win + R) and type \u201ccmd\u201d before hitting (Ctrl + Shift + Enter) to run as Admin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Step 2.<\/strong> In Command Prompt, type \u201cpowercfg \/hibernate off\u201d and hit \u201cEnter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Step 3.<\/strong> To re-enable, type \u201cpowercfg \/hibernate on\u201d and hit \u201cEnter.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another potential offender is the paging file, which can be disabled through System Properties:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Step 1.<\/strong> Right-click \u201cThis PC\u201d and choose \u201cProperties.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Step 2.<\/strong> Click \u201cAdvanced system settings.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"
