If you cannot duplicate slides in PowerPoint, the cause is usually something simple like selecting an object instead of the slide, working in a restricted file, or using a version with different slide-import features. In most cases, it will show up as disabled copy buttons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here\u2019s what\u2019s going on and how to get duplicating working again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fix 1 \u2013 Select the Slide Thumbnail First if You Cannot Duplicate Slides in PowerPoint via Shortcut<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you clicked into a text box or image on the slide, \u201cCtrl + D\u201d duplicates only the object rather than the slide, and \u201cDuplicate Slide\u201d might not show up in the right-click menu. You\u2019ll need to work with entire slides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 1.<\/strong> Click on the slide thumbnail in the left-hand panel (while in \u201cNormal\u201d view), so it gets a highlighted border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 2.<\/strong> Hit \u201cCtrl + D\u201d (\u201cCommand + D\u201d for Mac) or right-click on the thumbnail and select \u201cDuplicate Slide.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alternatively, you can go to the \u201cHome\u201d tab, click the arrow under \u201cNew Slide,\u201d then select \u201cDuplicate Selected Slides.\u201d This also works if you select multiple slides by holding \u201cCtrl\u201d and clicking on the slides you want to copy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fix 2 \u2013 PowerPoint Duplicate Slide Not Working Because \u201cReuse Slides\u201d Was Removed<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019re used to copying slides over from another presentation, Microsoft has retired \u201cReuse Slides\u201d in Microsoft 365, and opening it shows a message that it\u2019s been removed. However, the feature \u201cReuse Slides\u201d is still there for PowerPoint 2021 and other perpetual desktop versions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019re used to the feature when working with multiple different PowerPoint presentations, here\u2019s what to do instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 1.<\/strong> Open both files.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 2.<\/strong> Go to the \u201cView\u201d tab and click \u201cArrange All\u201d to place the windows side by side. It will be under \u201cWindow\u201d options if PowerPoint isn\u2019t full-screen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 3.<\/strong> Switch both files to \u201cNormal\u201d view, then drag and drop slides between them to copy them over. You can also use traditional copy and paste shortcuts, and you can choose \u201cKeep Source Formatting\u201d instead of \u201cUse Destination Theme\u201d from the right-click context menu for pasting to modify it for the second file\u2019s defaults.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fix 3 \u2013 Make Sure the File Is Editable<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A PowerPoint file downloaded from the internet may open in Protected View, which limits editing until you enable it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 1.<\/strong> If a yellow or red bar appears under the ribbon and you know who sent you the file, click on \u201cEnable Editing\u201d (or \u201cEdit Anyway\u201d).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 2.<\/strong> Go to \u201cFile\u201d and then the \u201cInfo\u201d section, then check \u201cProtect Presentation.\u201d If the file is marked as final, the pane will be highlighted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 3.<\/strong> If \u201cMark as Final\u201d is enabled, select it again to override the status and allow it to be editable. If the presentation is protected with a password, you\u2019ll need to input it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If the file is an old .ppt, you may need to convert it to a .pptx file first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fix 4 \u2013 Restart PowerPoint and Test Another Presentation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In some cases, a large file might\u2019ve just happened to go over your device\u2019s memory limit and got stuck or parts of it can\u2019t load.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 1.<\/strong> Save the presentation and shut down PowerPoint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 2.<\/strong> Reopen PowerPoint and create a new blank presentation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 3.<\/strong> Add two or three slides and then try \u201cDuplicate Slide\u201d from the thumbnail pane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 4.<\/strong> If duplication works in the new presentation, the original file may be damaged or have a compatibility problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can also try using a different device with more RAM or increase the paging file size to improve working memory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fix 5 \u2013 Update or Repair Office<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If none of the above helps, you can try to repair Office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 1.<\/strong> Go to Settings and open \u201cApps.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 2.<\/strong> Under \u201cInstalled apps,\u201d find Microsoft Office or Microsoft 365, then click on its three-dot menu and select \u201cModify.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 3.<\/strong> Choose the \u201cQuick Repair\u201d option first, then recheck if duplication works. If not, try an \u201cOnline Repair\u201d if needed.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t
