{"id":451106,"date":"2026-10-16T07:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-10-16T01:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.guidingtech.com\/?p=451106"},"modified":"2026-10-22T12:01:48","modified_gmt":"2026-10-22T06:31:48","slug":"dism-isnt-working-now-what","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.guidingtech.com\/dism-isnt-working-now-what\/","title":{"rendered":"DISM Isn\u2019t Working \u2013 Now What?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If DISM is not working, the problem may be a typo in the command, corruption in the Windows component store, or an issue with the source files DISM uses for repairs. The issue can show up as a scan that hangs, a \u201cDISM failed. No operation was performed\u201d message, or an error code.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here\u2019s what to do when DISM fails, starting with error codes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>87 \u2013 The parameter is incorrect, usually a syntax mistake.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>5 or 740 \u2013 DISM isn\u2019t running with admin rights.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>0x800f081f, 0x800f0915, or 0x800f0906 \u2013 DISM can\u2019t find or download the repair files.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>50 \u2013 DISM doesn\u2019t support servicing Windows PE with the \u201c\/Online\u201d option, which can happen if you run it from a recovery environment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-fix-1-check-the-syntax-if-dism-is-not-working\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fix 1 \u2013 Check the Syntax if DISM Is Not Working<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Error 87 often means DISM didn\u2019t understand a parameter or command. Make sure the command follows the correct syntax, including spaces between its components. Copying commands from websites can also introduce incorrect characters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Step 1.<\/strong> Search for \u201cCommand Prompt,\u201d select \u201cRun as administrator,\u201d and confirm the User Account Control prompt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Step 2.<\/strong> If needed, enter the command manually, making sure it matches the following syntax.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>DISM \/Online \/Cleanup-Image \/RestoreHealth<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1095\" height=\"632\" src=\"https:\/\/www.guidingtech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/DISM-Isnt-Working-1.jpg\" alt=\"DISM Isnt Working 1\" class=\"wp-image-451108\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.guidingtech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/DISM-Isnt-Working-1.jpg 1095w, https:\/\/www.guidingtech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/DISM-Isnt-Working-1-300x173.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.guidingtech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/DISM-Isnt-Working-1-1024x591.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.guidingtech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/DISM-Isnt-Working-1-768x443.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.guidingtech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/DISM-Isnt-Working-1-667x385.jpg 667w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1095px) 100vw, 1095px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Step 3.<\/strong> Click \u201cEnter\u201d and wait for the scan to finish without closing the window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-fix-2-clean-up-the-component-store-if-dism-is-not-working\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fix 2 \u2013 Clean Up the Component Store if DISM Is Not Working<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When RestoreHealth stalls or keeps failing, leftover update files or pending operations in the component store might be blocking it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Step 1.<\/strong> In the Command Prompt, run:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>DISM \/Online \/Cleanup-Image \/StartComponentCleanup<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1097\" height=\"641\" src=\"https:\/\/www.guidingtech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/DISM-Isnt-Working-2.jpg\" alt=\"DISM Isnt Working 2\" class=\"wp-image-451109\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.guidingtech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/DISM-Isnt-Working-2.jpg 1097w, https:\/\/www.guidingtech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/DISM-Isnt-Working-2-300x175.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.guidingtech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/DISM-Isnt-Working-2-1024x598.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.guidingtech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/DISM-Isnt-Working-2-768x449.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.guidingtech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/DISM-Isnt-Working-2-659x385.jpg 659w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1097px) 100vw, 1097px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Step 2.<\/strong> If Windows is failing to boot after an update or servicing operation, use the appropriate recovery procedure to revert pending actions. Do not run \u201c\/RevertPendingActions\u201d as a routine repair step on a working Windows installation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Step 3.<\/strong> Run the RestoreHealth command from Fix 1 again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can also add \u201c\/ResetBase\u201d to the end of the StartComponentCleanup command for a deeper cleanup, but keep in mind it means you won\u2019t be able to uninstall any updates that are already installed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-fix-3-reset-windows-update-components\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fix 3 \u2013 Reset Windows Update Components<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since DISM downloads repair files through Windows Update by default, a broken update cache can make it hang while downloading or fail outright. Resetting it clears out the cached files.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Step 1.<\/strong> Open Command Prompt as administrator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Step 2.<\/strong> Run the following commands one at a time, selecting \u201cEnter\u201d after each:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>net stop wuauserv<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>net stop bits<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>net stop cryptsvc<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>ren %systemroot%\\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>ren %systemroot%\\System32\\catroot2 catroot2.old<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>net start wuauserv<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>net start bits<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>net start cryptsvc<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Step 3.<\/strong> Restart the PC and run DISM again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you use a proxy or a third-party antivirus, it\u2019s also worth turning off the proxy under \u201cSettings\u201d &gt; \u201cNetwork &amp; internet\u201d &gt; \u201cProxy\u201d and pausing the antivirus temporarily, since both can block DISM\u2019s downloads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-fix-4-run-chkdsk-to-rule-out-disk-errors\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fix 4 \u2013 Run CHKDSK to Rule Out Disk Errors<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If DISM gets stuck or fails without a clear message, file system errors on the drive might be interfering with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Step 1.<\/strong> Open Command Prompt as an administrator and run:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>chkdsk C: \/f \/r<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Step 2.<\/strong> If prompted to schedule the scan for the next restart, type Y and press \u201cEnter.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Step 3.<\/strong> Restart the PC and let the scan finish. This can take a while on larger or older drives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Step 4.<\/strong> Once Windows loads, run DISM again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-fix-5-do-an-in-place-upgrade-if-dism-still-fails\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fix 5 \u2013 Do an In-Place Upgrade if DISM Still Fails<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If none of the above works, an in-place upgrade reinstalls Windows over itself while keeping your files, apps, and most settings, which replaces the damaged image DISM couldn\u2019t repair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Step 1.<\/strong> Download a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/software-download\/windows11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Windows 11 ISO<\/a> that matches your existing installation, mount it, and then run setup.exe from the mounted drive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1280\" height=\"686\" src=\"https:\/\/www.guidingtech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/DISM-Isnt-Working-3.jpg\" alt=\"DISM Isnt Working 3\" class=\"wp-image-451110\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.guidingtech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/DISM-Isnt-Working-3.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/www.guidingtech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/DISM-Isnt-Working-3-300x161.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.guidingtech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/DISM-Isnt-Working-3-1024x549.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.guidingtech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/DISM-Isnt-Working-3-768x412.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.guidingtech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/DISM-Isnt-Working-3-718x385.jpg 718w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Step 2.<\/strong> Follow the prompts, and when you reach the \u201cReady to install\u201d screen, make sure \u201cKeep personal files and apps\u201d is selected. If it isn\u2019t, click \u201cChange what to keep\u201d to select it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Step 3.<\/strong> Click \u201cInstall\u201d and let the PC restart as many times as it needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On recent Windows 11 versions, you can also go to \u201cSettings\u201d &gt;
